It would be impossible, at least in a single blog, to rattle off all the cool emergency preparedness items and examples of disaster survival gear that we carry here at CH Kadels.

But we can start with some unique ones, and these are some of the most utilitarian. Check them out, from basic can openers to portable solar panels.

Personal Water Filters

The thing about boiling water is that, even though it kills microbes, it doesn’t remove impurities that can also be harmful to your health.

That’s why a system like a Membrane Solutions Personal Water Filter Straw (similar to a LifeStraw) is a better bet, all things considered.

Consisting of a coarse filter screen, a PP cotton, then coconut shell activated carbon followed by a hollow fiber membrane, this personal water filter can remove 99.99% of substances down to .1 microns.

It ensures safer drinking water in the widest range of adverse conditions and can filter through 1500 liters before it needs to be replaced.

Rechargeable Arc Lighters

If you have access to a little bit of electricity, you have effectively limitless access to fire as long as you’re equipped with a rechargeable arc lighter.

The Pyre Double Arc USB Rechargeable Lighter is a good option. It’s quick charging, waterproof, and wind-resistant, plus, since it doesn’t burn conventional fuel, it doesn’t need a wick, a flint, or lighter fluid.

P-51 Can Openers

Few other examples of disaster survival gear are as affordable and utilitarian as the P-51 Can Openers that we carry here.

Foldable, lightweight, cheap and effective, they make short work of cans and are designed to efficiently and quickly open cans that don’t have pull rings or tabs.

Can you use a knife or some other tool to open a can in a pinch? Sure, but it’s dangerous for you - you’d better not slip - and even worse for the tool. Most steels won’t take much cutting through tin and aluminum before you need to resharpen them, anyway.

Do the smart thing - pick up a few of these for a few bucks and you’ll never need to run afoul of a stubborn can again.

Micro Sparkwheels

Our Micro Sparkwheels feature high-quality, corrosion-resistant brass construction, as well as an adjustable tension spring. They’re also waterproof and come with three replacement flints.

They’re basically lighters without the lighter fluid. They produce the sparks, all you need is some good tinder. Lint, down, cotton puffs, dry grass, and more all are great options.

Along with a good ferrocerium rod, every bug out bag should have at least one of these.

Ultralight Folding Stoves

We sell a few different instances of folding stoves here, but a great one is the Trailblazer Ultralight Folding Camp Stove.

Super-lightweight, these stoves break down into a few pieces and come with a convenient carrying pouch.

Even more importantly, they feature extremely durable stainless steel construction and are compatible with a variety of different fuel types - solid fuel cubes, or just whatever you find on the ground.

Trailblazer 9-in-1 Survival Sticks

Few other survival essentials are as compact and utilitarian as the Trailblazer 9-in-1 Survival Sticks that we carry here.

Integral to the design are hex and flathead screwdrivers, a whistle, a glass breaker, compass, bottle opener, and more. There’s even a blade and a fishing line and hook contained within.

Portable Solar Panels

We carry a few different types of portable solar panels here but all of them are worth their weight in proverbial gold.

If you’re ever out on the trail and you need a charge but have no access to electricity, if you have some sun you can convert that free sunlight into usable electricity with a portable solar panel charging device.

One thing to look out for is the mAh, or milliamp hour, rating. The higher the mAh rating, the greater the overall charge the device can help, which means it will be able to charge more devices (or charge the same device multiple times). The tradeoff is that it usually takes higher-mAh devices longer to charge, on average, and most portable solar panels are not particularly fast-charging to begin with. But as disaster survival gear, they are must-haves.

For quick reference, a 10,000 mAh solar panel power bank can usually charge an iPhone between 2-3 times, depending on the model and health of the battery.

Trailblazer Foldable Bait Fish Traps

These niche examples of disaster survival gear are useful for one very important reason; they enable you to trap food - and if you don’t want to eat the bait, guess what you can use the bait for?

Made of metal and durable polyester mesh, these Trailblazer Foldable Bait Fish Traps can be folded for easy storage as well as tethered or weighted down to keep them in place once deployed.

Trailblazer Outdoor Portable Heaters

Got a can of propane or butane? Great, you can power your little stove, but what about for heat?

You’re out of luck unless you have something like a Trailblazer Outdoor Portable Heater, which takes basic butane or propane and has a high-efficiency aluminum reflector that makes it effortless to heat up small spaces.

They also offer fast ignition and a durable design, yet weigh less than a pound.

Trailblazer Chain Saw

A portable hand chain saw - it’s basically a saw’s chain with comfortable plastic handles. Now, is it as fast or efficient as a gas-powered chainsaw?

Certainly not, but this Trailblazer Chain Saw is far more efficient than those other flexible wire saws, and on top of that, lighter and far more packable than other folding saws.

Actually, you’d probably be surprised at how quickly this thing eats through wood. For just a bit more than $10, you can’t afford not to have one.
